Generation V

“Your nails are yellow,” the mother says to her daughter.

“Green nail polish,” the daughter responds.

I’ve been there before. I believe that every time I’d been there before, I’d been too young to understand my surroundings. I’ve been to Paris and Madrid on a school trip (that time I ran around with my girlfriends drinking wine and smoking skinny cigarettes), back home to Poland with my parents (that time I had to explain to my Polish aunt what being “vegetarian” meant), around Italy with my parents (that time we ate gelato and my cousins and I all bought matching pairs of shoes), and finally, this year, I am going on my own (the time I remember more than an anecdote about my trip).

I’ll be writing here about pastries, alcohol, museums, and people. I’ll be posting photos, too. I’m doing this so that when I come back, and people ask about the trip, hopefully, I won’t forget anything or try to sum it up into one metaphor or image.

Some kind words about my short story Roleplay:

A disarming exploration of Russian history, casual sex and sudden closeness.

What astonished us when we first read “Roleplay” was the tension between a persistent sense of anxiety and a very delicate sweetness. The ambiguity of the characters’ relationship, the drabness of the settings, bedbug paranoia, and the monotony of everyday responsibilities evoke an alienating image of life in Montreal as a young adult. Yet this sense of isolation is carefully bridged in the vulnerability of the characters’ conversations.

The narrator, critical and pessimistic, and her lover, embarrassingly self-confident, are at odds throughout the piece. Despite this conflict, the author brings them together in unexpected moments of intimacy: the narrator mistaking roleplaying for lovemaking, the lover curled on her bed like a cat, the moment when he confesses to her that he is Chekov. As the lover slowly convinces the narrator of the realness of his personas, she surrenders her aloofness, abandoning her attachment to the cultural symbols that she uses to define him, and freeing herself in the process. Mostowski’s voice is situated firmly in the present and evokes the bleak humour of Joy Williams. “Roleplay” is funny and poignant, suggesting that human contact is still possible, even in the most unexpected places.

Lizy Mostowski co-curates the (excellent) reading series Synapse and is the editor-in-chief of Soliloquies Anthology. Her story, “Roleplay”, is funny but doesn’t feel far-fetched. Her narrative voice allows her to both feel and be felt vulnerable.
